OPERATIONAL HISTORICAL RECORD
Captain John W. Ripley was assigned as the Senior Marine Advisor to the 3rd Vietnamese Marine Battalion during the 1972 North Vietnamese Easter Offensive. His role was to advise the battalion commander, Major Le Ba Binh, and support their defense along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), which led to his legendary action at the Dong Ha Bridge on April 2, 1972.
POSTHUMOUS MEDAL OF HONOR
Colonel Ripley passed away in 2008, but his heroism was formally cemented on June 18, 2026, when he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
