On July 7, 1944, during the Battle of Saipan, Sergeant Thomas A. Baker (then Private) refused evacuation after being severely wounded. He insisted on being propped against a tree, requesting only a sidearm with eight rounds of ammunition. When his position was recovered, he was found deceased in that same seated position, his M1911 empty, surrounded by eight dead enemy soldiers.
